Although our winters here in Ireland tend to be pretty mild, driving through these colder month’s with an electric vehicle does require some small adjustments for safety and efficiency. Cold temperatures can reduce battery range, so there are a few things you can do to preserve energy and stay safe this winter. Let’s take a look at 5 tips for cold-weather performance we should all be aware of.
1. Preparing your EV for winter roads
Getting your EV ready for winter is key to safe and efficient driving! Start by checking your tyres to ensure they’re in good condition with adequate tread depth, as they’re your main point of contact with the road. Keep an eye on your battery health, maintaining a charge above 20% to minimise cold-related performance issues. Preconditioning your cabin heat while the car is connected to a charger can help optimise both comfort and range. Don’t forget to inspect your windscreen wipers and top up the washer fluid with one that includes an antifreeze agent—this will also help with defrosting. Plan your routes ahead of time, factoring in available charging stations, as charging can take longer in low temperatures. Lastly, prepare an emergency kit for unexpected winter conditions—being prepared can make all the difference!
2. Winter tyres vs. all-season tyres for EVs
Good tyres are crucial when driving an EV in the winter, as it directly impacts safety, performance, and efficiency. Winter tyres are designed with specialised rubber compounds and tread patterns to maintain grip and flexibility in cold conditions, reducing the risk of skidding. Unlike standard tyres, they provide better braking and cornering on icy or snow-covered roads. EVs, with their instant torque and heavier weight from batteries, demand tyres that can handle these unique challenges. Although Ireland doesn’t usually have cold enough weather to warrant full winter tyres, there are many all-season tyre options that will serve you well, all year round. Again good tyre choice using the recommended type to suit your EV, ensures optimal energy efficiency and safety in winter months.
3. Driving habits that preserve range in cold weather
It goes without saying to preserve range in an EV during winter you need to adopt smooth driving habits. Accelerate and brake gently to reduce energy consumption. Use eco-driving modes to limit power output and maximise efficiency. Heat the cabin while the car is charging to avoid draining the battery for heating. Limit use of seat warmers and climate control where possible, instead rely on heated seats and steering wheels if available as they tend to use less energy. Drive at moderate speeds, as higher speeds increase energy usage.
4. Charging considerations in winter
Charging an EV in winter requires a little more careful planning for efficiency and battery health. If you can, charge in a sheltered or indoor location to minimise the impact of cold temperatures. Precondition your car while it’s plugged in to warm the battery and cabin without draining range. Avoid letting the battery level drop below 20% to prevent reduced charging speeds. Use a Level 2 charger for quicker charging and consistent performance. If possible, charge your EV immediately after a drive when the battery is warmer for faster, more efficient charging.
5. Regenerative braking in snowy conditions
EV owners should be cautious when using regenerative braking in snowy conditions, as it can cause sudden deceleration, potentially leading to skidding on icy or slippery roads. In low-traction scenarios, regenerative braking may make it harder to maintain control, especially on curves or downhill stretches. Many EVs allow drivers to adjust or disable regenerative braking to suit road conditions. For safer driving, consider switching to a lower setting or relying more on traditional braking in snowy or icy environments. On most vehicles this can be adjusted by a button by the gear selector, or via the paddles behind the steering wheel. Please refer to your owners manual if you are unsure.
