5 of the Biggest Myths About Electric Vehicles - Debunked

As electric vehicles become more mainstream, myths and misunderstandings still find their way into Nevo HQ. Whether it’s outdated info or internet-fuelled assumptions, these myths can easily put off potential EV buyers. But the reality of owning and driving an EV is often very different from what some people believe.

Here are five of the most common electric car myths, and the facts that put them to rest.

1. EV Batteries Only Last a Few Years

Modern EV batteries are built to last. Most are designed to go well beyond 10 years, and many continue to perform reliably after more than 300,000 kilometres. Manufacturers typically back this up with warranties of around 8 years or 160,000 km. Real-world data suggests these batteries often outlast those promises.

Sure, a small amount of degradation happens over time, but it’s usually gradual and rarely impacts day-to-day usability. In fact, plenty of EVs from over a decade ago are still running strong with only minimal range loss.

2. You Can’t Take Long Trips in an EV

This used to be a valid concern back when EV ranges were shorter and charging points were scarce. But today? That’s an outdated view. Most new EVs offer over 300km of range on a single charge, and several models go well beyond 500 or even 600km. Combine that with a rapidly growing fast-charging network, and long journeys in an EV are now more than doable, they’re often hassle-free.

Plus, many EVs now come with built-in route planners that factor in charging stops along your route. With a bit of planning, road-tripping in an EV is not only possible, it’s enjoyable.

3. EVs Are Too Expensive

Yes, some EVs come with higher upfront prices than their petrol or diesel counterparts. But that’s changing, fast. Battery prices (which make up a big part of the cost) have fallen dramatically over the past decade, and EV pricing is getting more competitive all the time. With popular new models like the Renault 5, Hyundai INSTER and MGS5 all coming in under €30,000.

More importantly, the total cost of ownership often tips in the EV’s favour. You’ll likely save on fuel, maintenance, and tax, not to mention government grants and incentives. Plus, the used EV market is growing, opening the door for more budget-conscious buyers. For many, those savings quickly add up and outweigh the initial investment.

4. EVs Are Harder to Maintain Than ICE Vehicles

Actually, the opposite is true. EVs are mechanically simpler than internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. There are no oil changes, no timing belts, no exhaust systems, and far fewer moving parts to worry about.

Maintenance costs are generally lower, and visits to the garage tend to be less frequent. Regenerative braking also helps reduce brake wear, meaning even fewer replacements. Day-to-day servicing is usually limited to basics like tyre rotations, brake fluid, and cabin filters, straightforward and budget-friendly.

5. There Aren’t Enough Charging Stations

This myth might have been true in the early days, but it’s well out of date now. Public charging networks are growing fast, with chargers appearing across cities, towns, motorways, and even rural areas. In some regions, the number of public chargers now rivals or exceeds petrol stations.

Rapid and ultra-rapid chargers are increasingly common at service stations and rest stops, making top-ups on long trips quick and easy. Still, for most EV drivers, home charging remains the most convenient option, just plug in overnight and start every day with enough battery.

Charging infrastructure is improving year after year, and accessibility is only getting better. There are now over 2,500 public charging stations nationwide, and that number keeps growing. In even better news, plans are in place to roll out 53 new high-power charging hubs along Ireland’s national road network over the coming months. These hubs will add a total of 175 new fast and ultra-fast chargers, helping to make longer journeys smoother and quicker for EV drivers.

Whether you’re commuting locally or heading cross-country, finding a reliable charging point is getting easier by the day.

Why Nevo Believes EV Confidence Is Only Going Up

It’s normal to be cautious when embracing new technology, but the facts speak for themselves. Electric vehicles are reliable, increasingly affordable, practical for long-distance travel, and much simpler to maintain than many people think. With charging networks expanding and new models constantly improving, these myths are fading fast.

And the proof is in the numbers: the latest SIMI data shows continued growth in EV sales across Ireland. So if you’re still on the fence, it might be time to look past the noise, and into the future of driving.
