The shortlist for the 2025 Irish Car of the Year has finally been revealed, with many of the 40 contenders being either fully electric or plug-in hybrid.

The Irish Car of the Year awards are determined by a distinguished panel of jurors selected from the Motoring Media Association of Ireland (MMAI), comprising 29 of Ireland's most seasoned motoring journalists. These awards serve as a beacon for Irish drivers, recognising the top vehicles introduced in the country each year, with a keen understanding of the unique needs and preferences of the Irish market. Daragh Keany, Chairman of the MMAI, emphasised that the presence of 40 newly launched cars in the past year showcases that the industry is thriving.

The influx of new models entering the market has generated optimism for the near future, with notable entries from brands including BYD, Ford, Kia, Polestar, Volkswagen, and many more. With a healthy mix of established brands and new entrants, predicting the winner in each category is a challenging endeavor.

Last year, the 2024 Irish Car of the Year award went to the fully electric Hyundai IONIQ 6, marking the fourth year in a row an electric car has clinched the top title. Tom Dennigan of awards sponsor, Continental Tyres, adds that "Electric vehicles have really come to the fore over the last number of years." And with over 20 of the 40 entrants being fully electric, they are certainly contenders to keep an eye on.

To uncover whether the 2025 overall winner continues the trend with another electric model, Irish motorists must await the awards event on November 15th.
