The shortlist for the 2024 Irish Car of the Year has finally been revealed, with the majority of contenders being either fully electric or plug-in hybrid.

The Irish Car of the Year awards are determined by a distinguished panel of jurors selected from the Motoring Media Association of Ireland (MMAI), comprising of 33 of Ireland's most seasoned motoring journalists. These awards serve as a beacon for Irish drivers, recognising the top vehicles introduced in the country each year, with a keen understanding of the unique needs and preferences of the Irish market. Joe Rayfus, Chairman of the MMAI, emphasised that the presence of 32 newly launched cars in the past year has resulted in a robust selection of models for this year's awards.

The influx of new brands entering the market has generated optimism for the near future. Notably, new marques including BYD, Maxus, and Ora, have introduced their models to the Irish market this year, all of which are contenders for prestigious awards. With a healthy mix of established brands and new entrants, predicting the winner in each category is a challenging endeavour.

Last year, the 2023 Irish Car of the Year award went to the fully electric VW ID. Buzz, marking the third time an electric car has clinched the top title. To uncover whether the 2024 overall winner continues the trend with another electric model, Irish motorists must patiently await the awards event on November 3rd.
