Ireland Continues to Switch onto Electric Motoring

The latest data from SIMI show that almost 3,700 electric vehicles were registered in January, an increase of 36.52% in comparision to January of 2022.

The Top Performers of January

Hyundai Lead the Pack Going into 2023

In the overall standings, January was truly the month of Hyundai – with the brand holding the top spot across all three major powertrains. Following Hyundai, other brands that saw the most success were Kia, BMW, Volkswagen, and Nissan. If you're in the market for an electric car, be sure to consider these top-performing brands:

The Most Popular Models

According to reports by SIMI, the most popular vehicles across their respective engine types in January to date were:

  • Battery Electric Vehicle – Hyundai IONIQ 5
  • Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle – Hyundai Tucson
  • ICE Vehicle - Hyundai Tucson

What Counties Went Electric?

Dublin led the country with the most amount of EVs registered, leading with 1,619. Cork took second place with 419 EVs registered, followed by Kildare (197), Meath (170), and Galway (149). In terms of the biggest movers, Clare saw a 114.29% (60) surge in new electric vehicle registrations, with Leitrim (8) experiencing a 100% increase in demand in comparison to January 2022.

Across the entire nation, there was an overall healthy increase in EV adoption. This is a positive sign as the increased uptake in rural counties outside of urban hubs signifies that the country is taking positive steps in developing the infrastructure that can support successful EV adoption both in urban and rural areas. For example, the recent Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Strategy 2022-2025 published by newly-formed ZEVI outlines plans "to implement targeted infrastructure to benefit communities" and increase the adoption of EVs across Ireland - with the next three years being considered as "pivotal" to electric mobility in Ireland.
