SEAI EV Home Charger Grant - What You Need to Know

white ev being put on charge

The Electric Vehicle Home Charger Grant will allow homeowners and residents the opportunity to claim up to €600 towards the purchase and installation of a home charger unit. However, it’s important to note that from the 1st of January 2024 the grant will be lowered to a max claim of €300, all applications received before this date will not be affected.

The good news? The grant is now open to all homeowners, whether you own an electric vehicle or not. Plus, the installed charge point isn't limited to personal use—it can also benefit visitors or be utilised in rented accommodation.

This initiative aims to empower residents and homeowners who are planning on going electric by facilitating the installation of home charging points. To receive payment, it's essential to engage the services of a Safe Electric Registered Electrical Contractor. These can be found here.

The scheme exclusively backs smart chargers registered on SEAI’s Smart Charger Register, and is funded by Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI), within the Department of Transport, while SEAI administers this initiative.

Your Guide to Eligibility for the Grant

  • The EV must be parked in an off-street parking area linked to the home, and the charger should be connected to the applicant's residence (consult your electrician for the best installation guidance).
  • The Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN), located on your electricity bill, will be used to verify the location of your residence.
  • The property must not have received a previous EV home charge point grant payment, and it should not have benefited from the free ESB Ecars home charger before 2018.
  • Hold off on starting any work until the specified start date on your Letter of Offer. Otherwise, this expenditure will be considered ineligible, and you won't receive grant support for it.
  • Lastly, you are given a 6-month window from the date of this emailed Letter of Offer to finalise your installation. Ensure you return your Payment Request Form to SEAI within this timeframe, along with all necessary supporting documentation, including Cert 3, Test Record, a photo of the installation, and the invoice from your electrician.
