BMW iX2 - Review

It’s no secret that BMW produces top-tier electric vehicles, and the iX2 is its newest addition. Named after its gasoline counterpart, the BMW X2, the iX2 shares its foundation with the BMW iX1. However, while the X1 boasts an upright, practical design, the X2 and iX2 sport a striking coupe-like profile with a sloping roofline.

Performance

With 308bhp spread across its axles, the iX2 xDrive30 doesn't hold back when it comes to power, despite its compact size. It makes full use of this power, benefiting from instant electric torque for quick acceleration and impressive manoeuvrability.

There are three distinct drive modes to choose from, although they combine power delivery, steering feel, and suspension settings, which might frustrate those who prefer to customise their preferences individually.

It also offers a choice of two power options. The base model eDrive20 boasts 201bhp, directed to the front wheels, achieving a 0-100 km/h sprint in 8.6 seconds. Alternatively, if you crave more power and four-wheel drive, the xDrive30 trim will get you from 0-100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds.

Range and Charging

No matter which iX2 model you choose, it comes equipped with a 66.5kWh battery, with the base model giving you 439km of range, and the more powerful eDrive30 providing a lower 417km range. While the iX2 doesn't dominate the field in terms of range among EVs, it doesn't do too bad in what’s become a competitive segment. However, when compared to vehicles like the Tesla Model Y or Kia EV6, both boasting an official range of over 500 km per charge, the iX2 falls a little short.

When it comes to public charging, if you find a sufficiently powerful charge station the iX2 can top up at a maximum rate of 130kW. That’s good for a 10-80% charge in 29 minutes in a best-case scenario. You can also avail of the My BMW App which gives you detailed info on routes optimised for charging, making charging convenient and hassle-free.

Design and Interior

Design-wise, there’s not much to tell the iX2 apart from its petrol-powered X2 counterpart - only a filled-in front grille and associated badging. This makes it perfect for those who like the idea of making the switch to an EV without shouting about too much.

Just like the exterior, the iX2’s interior closely mirrors the regular X2, drawing inspiration from the X1/iX1 and similar to other small BMWs on the market. But that’s not to say that it’s a drawback, the inside doesn’t at all resemble an entry-level car, featuring rich materials and high-quality craftsmanship throughout. The dashboard is dominated by two large screens – a centre infotainment screen that measures 10.25 inches, and a 10.7-inch drive display, both sitting on the same piece of glass to give that seamless look and feel.

Drivers and front passengers of all sizes will find ample comfort in the BMW iX2. Despite its sleek silhouette, the iX2 offers a pleasant surprise in rear passenger space. Even a six-foot tall adult can sit comfortably behind someone of a similar height, enjoying generous leg and headroom. in addition to this, the iX2 boasts a 525-litre boot with a practical size and shape.

Cost Considerations

The entry-level iX2 eDrive20 costs about the same as an entry-level Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron or a Polestar 2, with a starting price from €54,580. And if you want the extra performance that comes with xDrive30, then the asking price does increase quite a bit to €69,500.

BMW also offer a nice warranty for the ‘i’ vehicles, giving you three years unlimited mileage cover from the date of first registration. Along with roadside assistance and protection for the BMW i high voltage battery for up to eight years or 160,000km, whichever comes first.

Conclusion

All in all, the BMW iX2 emerges as a worthy option for those seeking an electric coupe-SUV, particularly if they appreciate the concept of driving an EV without the typical visual cues. It boasts an impressive cabin and delivers a pleasant driving experience. The single-motor model, offering slightly better range and not so slightly lower price, might be the more practical choice. However, if range significantly influences your daily routine, you may discover other appealing options within this price range.
