Kia EV9 - Review

Marking the brand’s debut in the three-row electric flagship SUV category, this spacious and eye-catching vehicle showcases a blend of ruggedness, sophistication, and cutting-edge technology. Offering both six and seven-seat configurations, it merges bold design, premium adaptability, diverse connectivity, and Kia’s hallmark ‘Opposites United’ design approach, ensuring a versatile vehicle prepared for any adventure.

Performance

The Kia EV9 is offered in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations, each equipped with a 99.8kWh battery incorporating Kia’s fourth-generation battery technology. Specifically, the all-wheel drive GT-line model is propelled by dual 141kW electric motors, delivering a peak torque of 350Nm for both the front and rear wheels. With a total max power of 384hp and a top speed of 200km/h, this variant completes the sprint from 0 to 100km/h in just 5.3 seconds. The good news is that you don’t need to drive fast to appreciate the EV9’s ride comfort. Even with its sizeable 21-inch wheels, the Kia impressively maintains good body control, effectively managing its weight, which reaches 2,674kg in its heaviest configuration.

Range and Charging

The Kia EV9 stands out with an impressive WLTP estimated all-electric range of up to 563km, coupled with an advanced 800-volt fast charging system. This not only maximises your driving time but minimises those lengthy charging stops. Just a quick 15-minute charge can provide a substantial estimated range of up to 249km for the rear-wheel-drive version and up to 219km for the all-wheel-drive variant.

When it comes to charging, the EV9 can go from 10 to 80 percent in just 24 minutes. What’s more, the EV9 features V2L (vehicle-to-load) capability, enabling users to power external devices like power tools or camping equipment, adding a touch of practicality to the package. Kia takes the game a step further by integrating V2G (vehicle-to-grid), V2H (vehicle-to-home), and V2B (vehicle-to-building) compatibility, allowing the battery to supply energy to external locations when connected to a bidirectional charging unit. This forward-thinking integration aligns with modern demands, providing not just a vehicle, but a potential power source for various needs.

Design and Interior

The EV9 boasts a roomy interior designed with a minimalistic and user-friendly layout. Thanks to the distinctive EV architecture built on the extended wheelbase and flat floor of the E-GMP, it offers a more than generous amount of cabin space. The EV9 features three rows of seats, available in either 6-seat, which features a 180-degree swivel function, or the standard 7-seater configuration. Notably, it stands as one of the select few 7-seat EV's currently available, catering to those seeking spaciousness and versatility in the electric vehicle market.

The panoramic wide display includes a 12.3-inch driver cluster, a 12.3-inch AVNT screen, and a 5.3-inch climate system offering seat and heating details. Additionally, the vehicle comes equipped with a head-up display for added user convenience. Delving into ambience, diverse mood lights accompany the front and rear armrests, as well as the map pocket, offering various lighting functions for a more personalised and innovative interior experience.

Cost Considerations

The 7-seater Earth Model is priced at €77,500, while the 6 and 7-seater GT-line Models are priced at €85,500. Although the exterior design of the Kia EV9 may provoke mixed opinions due to its polarising appearance, it's the interior where the vehicle truly shines and wins over many. With remarkable standard equipment, the GT-Line offers various rear seat layouts, adding to its appeal alongside enhanced performance. The combination of unique exterior style, ample high-quality interior space, and refined driving dynamics justifies its price, especially when compared to rival models.

Conclusion

The Kia EV9 stands out as a versatile all-electric SUV tailored for modern lifestyles. Its spacious interior, innovative tech, and diverse seating options make it an appealing choice. While opinions may vary on its exterior, the impressive interior and enhanced performance in the GT-Line models validate its competitive edge in the Electric SUV segment.
