Video Review
The Lexus RX finally gets a Plug-in Hybrid powertrain option with this fifth-generation design, taking another big leap forward for the Japanese carmaker.
Performance
The Lexus RX range combines a petrol engine and electric motor for front-wheel drive, while an additional electric motor propels the rear axle, creating a versatile four-wheel-drive system. Sharing the 2.5-litre four-cylinder plug-in hybrid system with the Toyota RAV4, it features an 18.1kWh battery pack and electric motors on each axle, delivering a robust 309bhp for a swift 0-100km/h time of 6.5 seconds.
A simple button near the gearstick allows you to switch between 'EV' full-electric drive and the practical 'HV' mode, which functions as a regular full-hybrid. The system seamlessly blends petrol and electric power as needed. For those who prefer a hands-free experience, an 'Auto EV/HV' mode button is also provided, taking care of all driving mode decisions.
Range and Charging
Charge the 18.1kWh battery pack, and Lexus pledges an impressive 60km of electric-only driving. Anticipate covering approximately 45-50km on motorways and main roads, with optimal efficiency during urban driving. Thanks to dual motors, the RX delivers an impressive performance in electric mode, reducing reliance on the petrol engine. On extended journeys, activating the petrol engine enables the RX 450h+ to achieve an efficient 6.5 litres per 100km.
Thanks to a 6.6kW on-board charger, it takes just two and a half hours to recharge from a standard 7.4kW garage Wallbox with a 230 Volt / 32-amp connection. Even if you're using a less powerful source like a domestic plug, the replenishment time extends to 8 hours and 15 minutes, making it a doable overnight task.
Design and Interior
In its fifth-generation iteration, the RX has received a fresh visual update, breathing new life into its appearance. The design is now more dynamic, drawing clear influence from Lexus's full-electric RZ model and the smaller NX. Over the years, Lexus has consistently refined the design, enhancing comfort, reducing noise, and incorporating even more cutting-edge equipment, further elevating the RX's overall appeal.
The dashboard's central 14-inch screen showcases Lexus' cutting-edge software, a significant upgrade from previous models. Offering seamless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Hey Lexus connectivity. The tech-savvy experience is complimented by an ample selection of four front-facing USB sockets (including one Type A and three Type C). Additionally, most models feature a customisable ambient lighting system with 64 colours and 14 pre-set themes, allowing for a personalised and immersive driving experience.
