Maserati Granturismo Folgore - Review

The GranTurismo Folgore marks a turning point for Maserati, not only is it the most powerful road car the brand has ever produced, but it’s also a bold declaration of its electric future. For a manufacturer so deeply associated with roaring petrol engines, the idea of an all-electric GranTurismo would have sounded impossible just a few years ago. Yet here it is: Maserati’s first electric GT, wearing the “Folgore” badge, meaning lightning in Italian. With more EVs to come, including the long-awaited MC20 Folgore, this coupe sets the tone for the brand’s reinvention.

Performance

Under the skin, the GranTurismo Folgore doesn’t settle for a conventional two-motor setup. Instead, it packs three motors, one at the front and two at the rear, producing a combined 751bhp and an astonishing 1,350Nm of torque. That’s more power than Maserati’s legendary MC12 Versione Corsa and double the pulling force of its most potent petrol GranTurismo.

The results are dramatic. Even in slippery, cold conditions the car rockets to speed with ease, feeling every bit as fast as the numbers suggest. Switch from its efficiency-focused setting into Sport mode, and the car unleashes its full character. The official 0–100km/h sprint is just 2.7 seconds, making it quicker than any other GranTurismo, while top speed sits at a blistering 325km/h. Unlike some fast EVs that tail off after the initial surge, the Folgore continues to build speed with relentless force.

Range and Charging

With this kind of power, you’d expect efficiency to take a hit, yet the Folgore still manages up to 450km of range on a full charge. Thanks to its 800V system, charging is equally impressive: at a suitable high-power charger it can take on 80% charge in under 20 minutes, making it as convenient as it is powerful.

Design and Interior

From the outside, the Folgore blends classic GranTurismo proportions with fresh aerodynamic touches. Inside, the cabin is a mix of traditional Maserati craftsmanship and modern EV thinking. The two-tone interior in our test car, a striking blue and cream combination that feels bespoke, with thoughtful detailing running throughout.

Maserati has also leaned into sustainability, with seat inserts made from Econyl, a recycled nylon derived from fishing nets and other waste plastics. Subtle ambient lighting, copper-woven trim, and a digital central clock (which can show anything from a compass to a G-meter) add unique character. The twin-screen infotainment layout works well too, splitting media and car settings on the upper display while leaving climate controls on a dedicated lower panel.

Cost Considerations

The GranTurismo Folgore sits at the top of Maserati’s line-up, and its price reflects that. While exact Irish pricing hasn’t been confirmed, in the UK it starts at just under £180,000. That places it above rivals like the Porsche Taycan Turbo S and Audi RS e-Tron GT, but below ultra-luxury EVs like the Rolls-Royce Spectre. What you’re paying for here is not just speed, but exclusivity and Italian flair.

Verdict

The Maserati GranTurismo Folgore is an EV with real drama. The three-motor setup delivers breathtaking performance, the ride and handling are finely judged, and the design stays true to Maserati’s grand touring roots while pointing firmly to its future. It’s expensive, yes, but it’s also one of the most striking and desirable electric cars on sale today. And when you roll up to a public charger, expect it to turn more heads than just about anything else plugged in beside you.
