Video Review
We recently visited the impressive new premises of myenergi to meet the team and take a first look at their latest product, the zappi GLO. For those not aware, myenergi’s renowned zappi product was the world’s first solar and wind compatible electric car charger and it garnered the company major traction across Ireland and the UK Europe and Australia. Today we meet with Noel Hynes, Neil Stanton and Lee Sutton from myenergi Ireland.
Noel thanks for speaking with us, can you tell me a bit about the business?
No problem, we’ve been trading in Ireland for around seven years and we’re now the market leader in home EV charging. We offer both tethered and untethered chargers in the current 2.1 range, and we’ve just launched zappi GLO. It’s a fresh design that’s been really well received by both installers and customers.
Tell us what sets zappi GLO apart?
Well it’s a simpler, cleaner take on our earlier chargers. Customers asked for a version without the on-unit screen, so we removed it and added RFID access, a 6.5-metre cable as standard, and a design that’s easier to operate and more efficient to manufacture. It’s sustainably produced and built with day-to-day usability in mind.
Are these units manufactured locally or overseas?
Yes, we manufacture in Cork and at our UK facility, with offices in Dublin and a dedicated distribution hub for Ireland. Quality control is hugely important to us, so we have Neil Stanton and his team overseeing this end of the business.
Neil, we appreciate your time, tell our readers how you approach quality in the workplace?
It all starts with investment in people, processes and equipment. Our production lines are state-of-the-art, placing up to five million components a month and turning out more than 12,000 finished products, alongside tens of thousands of PCB assemblies. We use automated optical inspection and other checks throughout the line, run a manufacturing execution system that guides operators and tracks every unit, and we do 100% end-of-line testing. Not just a cursory check, each unit is put under load so we know it performs exactly as it should. Our Irish and UK sites work closely together and we meet several times a week, share knowledge both ways and keep improving the product and the process.
Very impressive, so let’s talk about the bigger picture and bring in one of the company founders Lee Sutton. Where did it start and what was the original inspiration?
We started almost ten years ago with a simple idea to help homes use more of their own renewable energy. That led to our EV charger, a home battery storage system and a solar diverter for hot water products that work together so customers can make the most of their solar. The zappi GLO is a response to where the market is at now. Early adopters loved deep solar integration but today’s mass-market EV drivers often just want something that looks great, is easy to use and “just works.” So we pared back the interface, removed the clutter and reduced the modes to a simple choice: smart charging ‘on’ or ‘off’. It’s more approachable without losing the intelligence behind the scenes!
