MG4 Urban - Review

MG has built its modern reputation on delivering strong value in the electric car market, and the new MG4 Urban EV continues that approach, but with a slightly different focus.

Rather than being a simplified version of the existing MG4, the Urban is a distinct model designed to deliver accessible electric driving in a larger, more practical package. In a market now filled with compact EV alternatives such as the Renault 5, BYD Dolphin and Citroën e-C3, the MG4 Urban aims to stand out by offering more space at a competitive price.

So, does it deliver?

Performance and Driving Experience

Although it shares the MG4 name, the Urban sits on a different platform designed to prioritise simplicity and affordability. It uses front-wheel drive and a compact battery setup, helping to keep weight down and interior space up.

On the road, the MG4 Urban feels composed and easy to drive. Acceleration is smooth and progressive, making it well suited to everyday commuting. It’s not designed to be a performance EV, but it feels confident up to motorway speeds and remains stable in mixed driving conditions. Ride comfort is a real strength of the MG4 Urban. It remains settled over rougher road surfaces, delivering a smooth and reassuring drive in a variety of conditions.

Steering is light and predictable, while braking feels reassuringly progressive. The suspension can feel slightly firm over rougher surfaces, and road noise is noticeable at higher speeds, but overall it strikes a reasonable balance between comfort and control.

In town, it feels agile and manageable, more hatchback than crossover, which many drivers will appreciate.

Battery Options, Range and Charging

The MG4 Urban is available with two battery options, offering flexibility depending on your needs.

The entry-level model features a 42.8kWh battery, delivering an official range of just over 320km. This version is likely to appeal to drivers primarily using the car for urban and short-distance travel.

Stepping up to the 53.9kWh battery increases range to around 415km, alongside a modest power boost. For most buyers, this larger battery option will offer the best balance between usability and value.

Rapid charging capability allows a 10–80% top-up in approximately 30 minutes, depending on battery size and conditions. Higher trims benefit from battery pre-conditioning, helping improve charging performance in colder weather.

On a standard 7kW home wallbox, the battery can be fully recharged in about 7.5 hours, making overnight charging simple. When using a typical 50kW public charger, a 10–80% charge takes roughly 40 minutes.

For drivers planning occasional longer trips, charging speeds remain competitive within this price bracket.

Interior Space and Practicality

One of the MG4 Urban’s strongest selling points is its size. Compared to many similarly priced electric cars, it feels noticeably more spacious inside.

Rear-seat legroom is generous, with enough room to comfortably accommodate adult passengers. Headroom is also impressive, and the flat floor enhances the sense of openness.

Boot capacity is particularly strong for the segment. With nearly 480 litres available, plus additional storage under the floor, it comfortably outpaces many compact EV rivals. There are also thoughtful storage solutions throughout the cabin, including a large central storage area and additional cubbies for smaller items.

The overall design of the interior leans more toward functional than flashy. It’s clean and straightforward.

Technology and Equipment

Standard specification includes a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a 7-inch digital driver display. You’ll also find a pair of USB-C connections and a 12-volt socket up the front too.

The infotainment system is responsive and easier to navigate than earlier MG systems, while dedicated climate controls below the screen improve usability on the move.

Higher trims add features such as heated seats, a heated steering wheel, a wireless charging pad and a 360-degree parking camera, helping to bring a more premium feel without dramatically increasing cost.

Overall, the equipment list is competitive for the price point.

Value and Running Costs

Although Irish pricing and final specifications have yet to be announced, the MG4 Urban is expected to position itself as one of the most affordable alternatives within MG’s electric range.

A familiar trim approach is anticipated, offering buyers a choice between Standard Range and Long Range variants.

The combination of usable range, competitive charging performance and generous equipment makes it an attractive option for buyers looking to enter the EV market without stretching into higher price brackets.

It won’t offer the longest range in the segment, but for drivers covering mostly urban and regional miles, it delivers more than enough capability.

MG4 Urban Verdict: Who Is It For?

The MG4 Urban EV isn’t trying to be a performance icon or a design statement. Instead, it focuses on practicality, value and ease of ownership.

For drivers who don’t require long-range capability and primarily use their car for commuting, school runs or local journeys, it represents a very sensible and well-priced electric option.

It may not be the most visually exciting EV in its class, but in terms of space, usability and overall value, the MG4 Urban makes a strong case for itself.

For many buyers, that balance may be exactly what matters most.
