MG has been on a serious roll in the European EV market, and the new MG S6 EV continues that momentum. Positioned as a large family-friendly electric SUV, it arrives ready to compete with some of the most popular models in the segment including the Skoda Enyaq, Citroën e-C5 Aircross Electric and the Kia EV5.
What MG has consistently delivered in recent years is strong value, plenty of standard equipment and competitive electric range, and the MGS6 EV follows that same formula. But in a crowded electric SUV market, does it have enough to stand out?
Let’s take a closer look.
Performance and Driving Experience
The MGS6 EV is offered with two powertrain options depending on how much performance you want.
The entry model uses a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 244hp, sending power to the rear wheels. That setup delivers a 0–100km/h time of around 7.3 seconds, which is more than quick enough for everyday driving.
For those looking for something more lively, MG also offers a dual-motor all-wheel drive version producing 361hp. That model cuts the sprint to 100km/h down to just 5.1 seconds, putting it firmly in performance SUV territory.
In daily driving, the MGS6 EV feels very approachable. The steering is light but predictable, and the accelerator response is smooth, making it particularly easy to manoeuvre around town or in tight car parks. For a large SUV, it doesn’t feel intimidating to drive.
On longer motorway journeys the car settles into a comfortable cruise, although rougher road surfaces can introduce a little extra road noise and the suspension can feel slightly firm over sharper bumps. This isn’t a car designed for spirited cornering, but that’s not really its mission either, the MGS6 EV is built for relaxed, comfortable driving.
Even the base model comes well equipped with MG Pilot, the brand’s driver assistance system that includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assistance and active safety technologies. The system also allows drivers to customise which safety features are active and quickly load those preferences each time you start the car.
Range and Charging Performance
Every version of the MG S6 EV uses the same 74.3kWh usable battery (77kWh total capacity), which simplifies the buying decision.
The official WLTP range reaches up to around 530km, depending on the model you choose. The dual-motor all-wheel drive version has a slightly shorter range, but it still comfortably exceeds what most Irish drivers will need for weekly commuting.
For context, that puts the MGS6 EV right in the middle of the competitive electric SUV segment. It offers a longer range than some rivals at a similar price point, although certain higher-spec competitors can push beyond the 600km mark.
Charging performance is competitive too. The S6EV supports DC fast charging up to 144kW, allowing a 10–80% charge in approximately 38 minutes at a suitable rapid charger. For most drivers, that means a quick coffee stop on longer trips will add a substantial amount of range.
MG has also included a standard heat pump, which helps maintain efficiency during colder weather, something that can be particularly useful in the Irish climate.
Another useful addition is Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, which allows the car to power external devices such as camping equipment or tools. An adaptor is required, which is available through MG dealers.
Interior, Technology and Comfort
One of the most surprising aspects of the MG S6 EV is how premium the interior feels, particularly when compared with earlier MG models.
Higher-spec versions offer faux suede upholstery in either grey or beige, which adds a more upmarket feel than you might expect at this price point. The materials and finishes throughout the cabin feel well judged, and overall build quality is strong.
The centrepiece of the dashboard is a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with built-in navigation, charging station search and smartphone connectivity.
MG has also finally introduced wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which will be welcome news for anyone familiar with earlier MG models.
One particularly refreshing feature is the inclusion of physical buttons for frequently used controls. Functions such as climate temperature, volume and demisting can be adjusted without digging through touchscreen menus, something many drivers will appreciate while on the move.
Behind the steering wheel sits a digital driver display, and across the cabin there are plenty of clever storage solutions including a large central storage compartment and a wireless phone charging tray.
Space, Practicality and Boot Capacity
As a family SUV, the MG S6 EV performs particularly well when it comes to space.
Rear passengers benefit from generous legroom and headroom, even when the panoramic glass roof is fitted. The floor height is also relatively comfortable compared to some electric SUVs, meaning taller passengers won’t feel cramped.
Boot capacity is another highlight. With the rear seats folded down, the S6EV offers up to 1,910 litres of cargo space, making it ideal for family trips, sports gear or bulky loads.
There’s also a front storage compartment (frunk) with 124 litres of space, the first MG model to include one, and a total of around 30 different storage areas throughout the cabin, which adds to the car’s everyday usability.
MG S6 EV Price in Ireland and Value for Money
Pricing is one of MG’s biggest strengths, and the S6 EV continues that trend.
In Ireland, the MG S6 EV starts from €39,495 for the Excite Long Range model. At that price, it undercuts many direct competitors while still offering a generous list of standard equipment.
Moving up to the Exclusive Long Range model, priced from €42,495, adds features such as a panoramic glass roof, larger 20-inch alloys, wireless phone charging, and a few other nice touches.
For drivers looking for the added performance of all-wheel drive, the Exclusive Dual Motor version starts from €46,495.
When you consider the space, range and technology on offer, the MG S6 EV positions itself as one of the more competitively priced large electric SUVs available in Ireland.
Verdict
The MG S6 EV may not be the sportiest electric SUV on the market, but that’s not really its goal.
Instead, MG has focused on delivering what many buyers actually want: strong electric range, generous interior space, plenty of technology and a competitive price.
For families looking to make the move to electric driving, the S6 EV ticks a lot of important boxes. It’s comfortable, easy to drive, packed with equipment and backed by MG’s growing reputation for value in the EV market.
If you’re considering a practical electric SUV without stretching into premium price territory, the MGS6 EV is certainly one worth adding to your shortlist.
