Video Review
The Nissan Micra is a name that stirs plenty of memories. For decades, it was a first car, a family runabout, or a learner’s trusty companion. Now, after five generations defined by petrol engines, this much-loved supermini is taking a bold step forward as a fully electric model. Developed in close partnership with the Renault 5 E-Tech, the new Micra shares some DNA with its French cousin but brings its own distinct identity and style. And for Irish audiences, the first chance to see it in person comes this November at the Nevo Electric Vehicle Show.
Performance
On the road, the Micra delivers exactly the kind of pep you’d expect from a modern EV. The 150hp version in particular feels eager in everyday driving, with smooth acceleration and a light, responsive feel around town. Even though torque figures might not sound headline-grabbing, the Micra’s size and balance make it a genuinely fun drive.
There’s also plenty of clever engineering underneath. A well-tuned chassis combines comfort with stability, ensuring the car feels composed on longer journeys while still nimble enough for city streets. Nissan has even sprinkled in just enough driver engagement to make the Micra more than just a sensible choice, it’s a car you’ll genuinely enjoy getting behind the wheel of.
One-pedal driving is available through Nissan’s e-Pedal system, and regeneration can be adjusted with steering wheel paddles to match your driving style. It’s user-friendly, adaptable, and easy to get used to.
Range and Charging
Buyers can choose between two battery options: a 40kWh pack offering up to 319km, or a larger 52kWh version capable of 419km on a single charge. Those figures put the Micra slightly ahead of the Renault 5, thanks to its aerodynamic design.
While real-world driving usually comes in a little below the official ratings, experience with similar systems suggests the larger battery will comfortably deliver around 350km per charge in everyday use. Charging is flexible too: both versions handle up to 11kW AC charging, while DC fast charging peaks at 100kW for the bigger pack (80kW for the 40kWh). That means easy top-ups whether at home, work, or on the go.
Design and Interior
Though its platform is shared with the Renault 5, the Micra wears its own distinctive look. Rounded LED lights front and rear give it character, while gloss black details on the mirrors, sills, and bumpers sharpen its overall appearance.
Inside, the layout is modern and practical. Twin 10.1-inch displays sit side by side, one for driver information, the other for infotainment. With Google integration built in, you get native access to Google Maps with EV route planning, Google Assistant for voice commands, and Google Play for apps and streaming. Connectivity is further supported with USB-C ports, a 12V socket, and additional outlets for rear passengers.
The flat rear floor makes the most of the compact footprint, while the 326-litre boot expands to a generous 1,106 litres with the rear seats folded down. Nissan is also offering different interior themes, Sport Chic, Zen, and Comfort, giving buyers room to personalise their Micra to taste.
Cost Considerations
Irish pricing has yet to be confirmed, but expectations are that the Micra will align closely with the Renault 5 E-Tech. That means a starting price of just under €26,000 (with SEAI grant and VRT rebate) for the smaller battery, rising to around €31,000 for the 52kWh version.
At those figures, it comes down to which car’s personality appeals more, the retro-inspired Renault or the sleekly modern Micra. Either way, you’re looking at one of the most appealing compact EVs available.
Verdict
The Micra has always been a car for everyone, accessible, reliable, and surprisingly fun. Its reinvention as a fully electric hatchback doesn’t just continue that legacy, it strengthens it. With strong performance for its size, practical range options, and an interior packed with technology, the new Nissan Micra is ready to win over a whole new generation of drivers.
