Peugeot e-208 - Review

For those considering a transition to a compact electric car, the Peugeot e-208 offers an excellent entry point. As the electric counterpart of the Peugeot 208 hatchback, the new e-208 features a refreshed appearance, an enhanced motor option, and a slightly extended driving range.

Performance

In the improved e-208 model, a recently upgraded 54kWh lithium-ion battery, boasting 48.1kWh of usable capacity, is matched with a new 156bhp electric motor—an upgrade from the previous 136bhp model—and a total torque of 260Nm. Operating through the standard single-speed automatic transmission found in electric vehicles, this motor enables the car to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in a swift 8.2 seconds.

The Peugeot e-208 offers a range of driver assistance systems designed to elevate comfort on extended journeys. These include a cruise control feature that manages acceleration, braking, and steering on motorways, alleviating the stress of long trips. In line with electric vehicle technology, the e-208 integrates regenerative braking. Unlike certain models with potentially sensitive brake pedals, the e-208 achieves a well-balanced response, ensuring smooth and effortless stops.

Range and Charging

The Peugeot e-208 provides a practical range of up to 399km on a single charge, with optimal performance expected during urban driving, which aligns with the e-208's ideal environment.

The e-208 boasts a battery that supports charging rates of up to 100kW. When connected to a fast CCS charging point, you can efficiently charge the battery from 10-80% in just about 28 minutes. Utilising a 7kW home charger extends the charging duration to approximately 7 hours for a complete 0-100% charge. For added flexibility, the E-208 offers an optional feature allowing it to accept rates of up to 11kW with a home charger, which should reduce the charging time significantly.

Design and Interior

The e-208 emerges as a compelling choice for those considering an electric vehicle without the desire to make a bold statement. In contrast to many competitors, it doesn't boast a distinctive design to set it apart as an electric vehicle. Visually, the only subtle exterior cues include discreet 'E' badging on the rear haunches, a distinctive front grille, and the absence of an exhaust pipe. Additionally, you'll discover a few EV-specific functions on the drive display. The e-208 seamlessly integrates electric technology into the familiar design of the 208 series, offering a more understated approach to driving electric.

The Peugeot e-208, while compact, provides generous space in the front, ensuring even taller people experience ample head and legroom. The interior's width prevents any potential elbow clashes between front-seat occupants. However, using it primarily for family purposes or attempting to fit three in the back may present some challenges.

The standard configuration features a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, offering DAB radio, Bluetooth, and, notably, both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For those opting for the GT models or selecting the available option, a larger 10.0-inch version of the same system is provided. The high-resolution screen in both cases facilitates easy navigation through menus, which include e-208-specific energy information.

Cost Considerations

The e-208 finds itself positioned at a higher price point compared to the BYD Dolphin and the MG4, both of which offer larger batteries at a more affordable rate. Considering this, we believe that the entry-level Active trim, starting at €32,780, stands out as the optimal choice in the lineup. It comes equipped with standard features like LED headlights, automatic air conditioning, rain-sensing wipers, rear parking sensors, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Stepping up to the mid-level Allure trim, priced at €34,650, introduces a 10.0-inch configurable digital driver’s display and a reversing camera. While the top-tier GT trim, coming in at €35,995, boasts luxury elements such as 17-inch alloy wheels, full LED headlights, a wireless charging pad, and ambient interior lighting, its higher price tag makes it less recommendable in comparison to the other available variants.

Conclusion

Boasting an enjoyable driving experience, reasonable comfort, solid craftsmanship, and an appealing aesthetic, the Peugeot e-208 stands out in its category. The suitability of the e-208 depends on individual circumstances, but it undeniably surpasses its predecessor, securing a competitive advantage in an expanding market.
