Peugeot E-408 - Review

The Peugeot E-408 is one of the more distinctive electric cars to arrive in Ireland in recent years. Blending hatchback, fastback, and SUV design cues, it offers a premium look and feel without the premium price tag. While rivals such as the Kia EV6, Škoda Elroq, and Tesla Model 3 offer more traditional shapes and longer-range options, the E-408 stands out for its design, refinement, and comfort-focused driving experience. If you’re looking for an electric family car that’s a little different, the E-408 might just hit the sweet spot.

Performance

On the road, the Peugeot E-408 leans into comfort rather than outright punch. Its electric motor delivers 210hp, enough to move the car with ease, especially around town and on quieter country roads. It’s not the quickest EV in its class, Tesla’s Model 3 will leave it behind, but the E-408 offers a balanced level of performance that feels well suited to daily driving. The 0–100km/h sprint takes 7.9 seconds, and while it won’t snap your head back, the strong mid-range torque means the car responds predictably whenever you press the accelerator. For most Irish buyers seeking a relaxed, refined electric drive, it’s more than enough.

Peugeot has also added steering-wheel paddles to adjust regenerative braking on the move. You can toggle between three levels, from mild resistance to a stronger setting that slows the car noticeably, though not quite enough for full one-pedal driving. It’s a welcome addition that gives the driver more control and improves efficiency without fuss.

Range and Charging

Peugeot keeps things straightforward with one battery option: a 58kWh pack paired with the 210hp motor. Official WLTP range is up to 452km which puts it ahead of many base-spec competitors but behind long-range alternatives offered by other brands. For most commuters, the range is more than adequate, but it’s a pity a larger battery option isn’t available for drivers who regularly cover long motorway distances.

Charging performance is competitive rather than class-leading, delivering a 20-80% top-up in less than 30 minutes when using DC fast charging, and around 7.5 hours for a full charge when using AC at home. A heat pump is also available on higher trims to improve winter efficiency. It won’t match the ultra-rapid charging speeds of Tesla or Kia’s 800-volt systems, but the E-408 still offers a reliable, predictable charging experience.

Design and Interior

Design is where the Peugeot E-408 really shines. The sculpted fastback shape, sharp front end, and coupe-style rear give it a high-end look that turns heads far more than you’d expect at this price point. It’s an EV that feels different, and in a segment filled with familiar SUV silhouettes, that’s no bad thing. Inside, Peugeot’s trademark i-Cockpit layout takes centre stage. The angular dashboard and layered materials create a surprisingly premium feel, even if some plastics don’t quite match the visual flair. The dual-screen setup, digital driver display plus infotainment system, looks impressive, though the software can feel a little sluggish at times.

Comfort is a highlight. Seats are supportive and available in fabric, leatherette, or full Nappa leather depending on the trim. Rear space is decent for adults, though bulky child seats may require some manoeuvring due to the sloping roofline. Boot space comes in at 471 litres, which is competitive but not outstanding. It matches the Škoda Elroq but falls short of larger EVs like the EV6 or Model 3. Still, the square layout makes the space easy to use.

Cost Considerations

Pricing for the E-408 starts at €38,995 which is just €1000 more than the Hybrid model. If you want to step things up to the GT trim, prices will start from €44,250. The Peugeot E-408 is well equipped from the start, with dual digital displays, LED headlights, and a rear parking camera included as standard. Stepping up to the GT trim adds Pixel LED headlights, a heated steering wheel, and 19-inch alloys, while the GT Premium enhances the cabin further with wireless phone charging, a 3D digital instrument cluster, and adaptive cruise control.

A heat pump is optional on most versions but comes standard on the top-spec model. Peugeot Ireland also provides strong reassurance with a five-year, 100,000km warranty and roadside assistance. The battery is covered separately for eight years or 160,000km, ensuring protection if its capacity drops below 70%. Together, these perks make the E-408 a compelling choice for buyers looking for long-term value and peace of mind.

Verdict

The Peugeot E-408 won’t suit everyone. If you prioritise maximum range, huge boot space, or ultra-fast charging, there are alternatives worth considering. But if you want an electric car that stands out from the crowd, offers a premium driving feel, and doesn’t break the bank, the E-408 is a compelling option. Its distinctive design, refined comfort, and generous equipment list make it one of the more characterful electric family cars available in Ireland today.
