Video Review
Polestar has officially opened orders for its latest vehicle. The Polestar 4, a midsize coupe-SUV, that's set to debut shortly after the Polestar 3 in the second half of 2024.
Performance
In the single-motor Polestar 4, a 200kW (272hp) motor is installed on the rear axle, generating 343Nm of torque, propelling the luxury SUV from 0-100km/h in 7.1 seconds. This performance is doubled in the dual-motor variant, featuring a second motor on the front axle for all-wheel drive, boasting a total maximum output of 400kW (544hp) and 686Nm of torque. Its acceleration time from 0-100km/h is reduced to 3.8 seconds, claiming the title of the brand’s swiftest production vehicle to date.
Range and Charging
The Polestar 4 aims for a WLTP driving range of 610 kilometres for the single-motor version and 570 kilometres for the dual-motor variant . It comes powered by a 100kWh lithium-ion battery, with 94kWh available for charging and powering the vehicle. This means that the usable energy for charging and driving is 94kWh, while the remaining battery cells work quietly in the background to maintain long-term battery health—an industry standard for modern lithium-ion batteries. Charging is facilitated by a 400V electrical system, boasting impressive peak charging rates of up to 200kW. This capability allows for rapid charging, with a 10-80% top-up in as little as 20 minutes when connected to a high-powered rapid charger. For everyday charging, most owners will opt for a 7kW home Wallbox, providing a full charge from nearly empty in about 14 hours
Design and Interior
The Polestar 4's most talked-about feature? The absence of a rear window. Instead, you'll find a standard full-length glass roof that extends beyond the rear seats, while the rear-view mirror has been swapped out for a high-definition screen displaying footage from a roof-mounted rear camera. This setup is said to provide a significantly broader field of view compared to the traditional rear-view mirrors found in most modern cars.
Directly in front of the driver sits a 10.2-inch instrument screen, complemented by a landscape-oriented 15.4-inch Google-powered touchscreen at the centre. Keeping things up-to-date, over-the-air updates will ensure the infotainment and drive systems stay fresh. Safety-wise, Polestar will equip the 4 with its latest safety systems, including 12 cameras, radar, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. The dashboard is sleek and minimalistic, with Google's voice control expected to handle many functions seamlessly. A smart blend of textiles and lighting lends an upscale ambiance inside, featuring an array of materials including a recycled knitted fabric developed in collaboration with a textile college in Sweden—solidifying its position as the brand's most sustainable car yet.
Cost Considerations
Pricing starts at €68,600 for the single motor variant, with the dual motor option priced at €76,200. The standard vehicle specification is already impressive, but additional packages are available to tailor specific options and enhance overall enjoyment.
The Plus Pack (€6,300) offers comfort and technology upgrades, while the Pro Pack (€2,200) adds 21-inch wheels and subtle design enhancements. Additionally, the Nappa upgrade, which can be combined with the Plus Pack, features animal welfare-secured Nappa leather upholstery with ventilation and massage capabilities, along with additional headrest speakers for the front seats and rear comfort headrests. For those opting for the dual motor variant, the Performance Pack is available at an extra cost of €5,000.
Conclusion
Polestar is undeniably leading the charge in advancing technology toward a more entertaining, connected, and autonomous future in their vehicles, and we're thrilled to witness their progress. While Polestar has begun selling its luxury SUV model in Ireland, initial deliveries aren't anticipated until August 2024.
