Smart #1 BRABUS - Review

 

Smart’s rebirth has been a significant one, with the Smart #1 representing the start of a new era for a company renowned for its compact two-seat city cars. Referred to as the “Smart hashtag One”, this vehicle stands as the inaugural outcome of a collaborative venture, marking a fresh chapter for the brand.

Performance

The Smart #1 offers a choice between two powertrains. The standard version features a single 272hp electric motor positioned on the rear axle, providing ample speed for most drivers. However, for an added performance boost, you can opt for the BRABUS model, complete with an extra electric motor driving the front wheels. This variant can accelerate from 0–100km/h as swiftly as an Audi RS3. The supplementary front axle electric motor elevates power and torque to an impressive 428hp and 584Nm. Unleashing the car's full potential requires activating its BRABUS drive mode, making it a little less manic for your urban driving.

Range & Charging

Every version of the #1 features the same 66kWh battery pack which, when paired with the 272hp electric motor, offers a maximum range of up to 335km. The BRABUS model can only manage 315km because of its extra electric motor, but both versions of the car can charge from 10–80 percent capacity in as little as 27 minutes as they both support 150kW DC rapid charging. If we’re comparing to the Atto 3 or Kia Niro EV, you would need to wait approximately 45 minutes for that same charge. For home charging, a Type 2 charge port facilitates a quick 0–315km charge in just 3 hours and 30 minutes.

Design & Interior

The exterior design closely mirrors the existing Mercedes EQ lineup, featuring the brand's distinctive front and rear LED light bars seamlessly integrated into the overall aesthetic. The Smart, in contrast to a typical Mercedes model, boasts a more adventurous appearance, highlighted by a floating roof and curvier proportions.

Unlike previous Smart models, the #1 is geared closer to the premium end of the market and, as such, has been given a more upmarket interior and improved ride and refinement. While you don’t reach the elevated height like most SUVs, the driving position of the Smart #1 is hard to fault. The seat provides ample support in key areas, and the extensive electric adjustments, including adaptable lumbar support, ensure you can easily achieve a comfortable and personalised driving experience.

The 9.2-inch digital instrument panel may appear narrow, but it compensates with a clear display that makes all necessary information easily readable. Premium and BRABUS editions are equipped with a head-up display that projects speed and other relevant details onto the windshield. At the centre of the dashboard, you’ll find a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. While Apple CarPlay and Android Auto aren’t available yet, it’s expected they’ll be introduced in an early over-the-air software update.

Cost Considerations

With the Irish launch expected next month, if we’re basing our expectations on the UK pricing, the Smart #1 may not be as budget friendly as an MG4 EV or MG ZS EV. However, it does present a more affordable option compared to certain key competitors, such as the BYD Atto 3 and the Kia Niro EV. The range topping BRABUS variant shares the same technological features as the Premium model but distinguishes itself with a sportier body kit, unique alloy wheels, and tastefully placed BRABUS badges. Inside, the cabin receives a few extra touches, including an Alcantara-clad replacement for the standard leather steering wheel and some enhanced suede upholstery for the seats.

Conclusion

Without a doubt, for many drivers, the Smart #1 checks all the boxes. Its driving experience at normal speeds is delightful, along with its smart technology and craftsmanship. However, while the BRABUS variant boasts an attractive appearance, its power and driving leans more towards overkill for most.
