As we know, Ireland’s EV charging network is growing rapidly, with multiple providers offering various charging options. Whether you own an EV or are considering making the switch, understanding the different charging stations available, their providers, and the best ways to use them can make your EV journey smoother. In this article, we asked our Nevo experts to break the various options down a bit further.
What types of EV chargers are currently available in Ireland?
Home Charging (AC – 3kW to 7kW) is usually done with a 7kW wallbox installed at home. It’s perfect for overnight charging, typically taking 6–10 hours, and lets you benefit from cheaper night-rate electricity. Destination Charging (AC – 7kW to 22kW) is commonly found at shopping centres, hotels, and workplaces. While slower, it’s great for topping up while your car is parked. For faster charging, Public Fast Chargers (DC – 50kW to 150kW) are located on motorways and main roads, delivering up to 80% charge in just 30–45 minutes, ideal for long-distance trips! Ireland also now offers Ultra-Fast Charging (DC – 150kW to 350kW), available at high-traffic locations and capable of rapid top-ups in under 20 minutes. Just keep in mind that not all EVs can charge at those speeds, so it’s worth checking your vehicle’s specs.
Who are the main charging providers in Ireland?
1. ESB eCars are the largest public charging network in Ireland. They offer AC (22kW), Fast (50kW), and High Power (150kW) chargers. App or ESB eCars card required for access. Their widespread availability gives reliable coverage across Ireland.
2. IONITY with their ultra-fast charging network (150kW-350kW), mainly on motorways are also growing in size. The pricing is higher but service is extremely fast. For quick long-distance travel charging they are ideal!

4. EasyGo have many partnerships with local businesses, offering AC and some DC fast chargers. They are expanding their network with affordable pricing. They are ideally located in smaller towns, destinations, and ready to use for EasyGo subscription holders.
5. Applegreen EV Charging are now known for fast and ultra-fast chargers (50kW-200kW) at motorway service stations. Aside from their own branded chargers some stations also offer ESB, Tesla, and IONITY chargers at different locations. Ideal for convenient motorway charging stops.
How to use EV Charging stations
You can find a charger by using charging apps like ESB eCars, PlugShare, Zap-Map, or Tesla’s navigation to locate chargers. Always check availability and pricing before heading there. When you do arrive, Tap your RFID card or use an app to activate the charger. For contactless payment, some newer chargers accept credit/debit cards. AC chargers take longer (3-8 hours), ideal for parking spots whilst DC chargers provide a rapid boost (15-45 minutes). To end the charge simply stop the session via the app, card, or charger screen. Always unplug and return the cable properly.
What are the best times to charge?
Charging at home during off-peak hours (11 PM – 7 AM) with a night-rate electricity plan can lower your costs—and tools like SSE Airtricity’s EnergiHub app make it even easier to save. Midday at shopping centres can be a good option also with destination chargers tending to be more available when others are at work. Where possible, avoid rush ours (5 PM - 8 PM) Remember public fast chargers are usually in high demand, leading to longer waits.
