With more used electric vehicles coming onto the Irish market each and every month, we are commonly asked what is the right used EV to go for, and how do you know? Here in NEVO we believe it involves considering several factors to match your preferences, lifestyle, and driving habits. With electric hatchback's, saloons, MPV’s and SUV’s now available, the choices are now more than ever. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you compare used EVs and make an informed decision.
Determine your needs and budget.
Start with the basics by determining your primary requirements, including the size of the vehicle, range, charging options, and budget. Consider your daily commuting distance, typical driving conditions, and any specific features or amenities you might prioritise. Do you need buggy space? Will the sports gear fit in? All basic considerations but a must.
Next you should research available models within the parameters set out above.
Explore the market to identify EVs that meet your criteria. Research different manufacturers, models, and trim levels to understand their specifications, features, and pricing. Pay attention to factors such as battery range, charging time, performance, interior space, and on board technology. A great place to start is by checking out our EV Video Review section and picking from the array of reviews on offer. We currently have a plethora of new and used reviews designed to educate, going live weekly!
Compare battery range and charging options.
It’s particularly important to evaluate the battery range of each used EV to ensure it meets your daily driving needs without range anxiety. Ask for a battery health check from the used car dealer for extra peace of mind. Consider the availability of charging infrastructure in your area and choose an EV with compatible charging options, including fast charging capabilities for convenience on long trips.
Test drive more than one electric vehicle!
Assess the performance characteristics and driving dynamics of each used EV, including acceleration, handling, and ride comfort. Take as many test drives as you can to experience firsthand how each model performs on the road and whether it meets your expectations in terms of driving experience. Some find the tranquil silence and instantaneous power quite addictive.
Is the interior comfort and features inline with your needs?
Evaluate the interior design, comfort, and features of each used EV to ensure they align with your preferences and lifestyle. Consider factors such as seating comfort, storage space, infotainment system, connectivity options, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). Is there wear and tear evidence on the seat bolsters, steering wheel and other touch points? Naturally visible wear can indicate high mileage so be sure to check!
Calculate ownership and running costs?
Compare the total cost of ownership, including purchase price, maintenance, insurance, and potential savings on fuel and maintenance expenses compared to perhaps the internal combustion engine vehicle you drive now. Factor in the cheaper road tax and see how the numbers stack up over a twelve month period for argument sake.
Consider the manufacturer reputation and reliability.
Research the reliability ratings and customer reviews of each used EV model to gauge their long-term durability and satisfaction levels. There is more info out there than ever. Consider the reputation of the manufacturer for producing reliable and high-quality vehicles, as well as the warranty length remaining on the vehicles that interest you. Don’t be put off by brands you are not overly familiar with. Do your own due diligence on the manufacturer.
Finally don’t be afraid to ask questions!
We are hearing many used dealers reporting very little interaction when people come to view used EV’s. The original questions like, was the timing belt done? Is it hard on fuel etc don’t necessarily translate to EV’s but there are plenty of questions you can ask. What size is the battery? How hard is it on electricity? How long will it take to charge? Does it need tyres? Can I tow a trailer etc? All valid questions that your used EV dealer should be happy to answer.
By carefully comparing used EVs based on these factors, you can narrow down your options and choose the right electric vehicle that best fits your lifestyle, budget, and priorities. From all the team at Nevo, we wish you happy hunting.
